To celebrate the launch of d’artiste: Matte Painting 3, CGSociety challenged the world’s matte painters to create a stunning matte based on a plate by one of the authors of the latest book, Milan Schere.
Somnath’s matte painting ‘Neo-Sparta’ won First Prize which is not just an achievement for him but also a deep satisfaction of being an artist whose work is judged by senior artists from different part of the world. He shares his experience with us as he mentions “I had a great experience with this CGSociety DMP challenge. All brilliant, experienced artists did their masterpieces of work. Congratulations to all the contestants for finishing their entries and getting them submitted on time. It was a great opportunity to show my talent to CGSociety members and visiting guests as well as pushing myself beyond my own boundaries. I know how hard it is to create personal pieces of Matte Painting within a short period of time.”
Somnath shares with us his experience of going through this challenge and Making of his winning matte painting ‘Neo-Sparta’ .
I very much liked this ‘Kreola After Earth’ concept and found it to be challenging. After reading through all the instructions I did some research on the subject and collected some references. I started my sketches in overtime, and worked up to the result. Initially it was hard to figure out the perspective, because the plate itself has many buildings making it tough. I believe it’s the biggest challenge for a Matte Painter to keep the elements from the original plate as much as possible and create the rest of the world around it.
I would like take this opportunity to thank the judges for their feedback throughout the WIP process which helped me a lot. I would extend my gratitude to all of the judges.
I started researching the subject. first quickly I made some concept art base on the subject and downloaded reference images. I know if you are doing any Digital Matte Painting work, always make B/W image so you can understand the black and white balance of the image. Of Couse lighting is very important when you are making concept art and here I started working further on concept.
So here is step by step detailing of the concept … hope you will enjoy this process of Digital Matte Painting.
